He Brought His Mistress To My Baby Shower, So I Gave Him One Final Gift

Chapter 8: He Threatened Custody, So I Opened The Last Folder

The final folder was grey.

No ribbon.

No envelope.

No handwritten warning.

It was the only one I had hoped not to open.

Daniel saw it and went still.

Good.

He knew grey.

He had seen that folder once before, on my desk, half-hidden beneath a stack of nursery catalogues.

He had asked what it was.

I had said, “Insurance.”

He had laughed.

He was not laughing now.

James looked at me.

“Emma?”

I nodded.

He took the folder gently, as if it weighed more than paper.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“You would not dare.”

I looked at him.

“You brought your mistress to my baby shower.”

That ended the question.

James opened the folder.

“This file concerns Emma’s pregnancy records, household responsibility logs, written communications, and documented absences.”

Daniel scoffed.

“Absences? I work.”

“You missed five medical appointments,” I said.

His jaw tightened.

“You told me each one was unavoidable.”

I looked toward Oliver.

“Two were during company events that did not exist.”

Oliver’s face darkened.

James turned another page.

“There are also messages in which Daniel refused to discuss birth plans, childcare arrangements, and financial support unless Emma signed the agreement presented last night.”

Margaret looked up sharply.

“What?”

Daniel snapped, “This is being twisted.”

I shook my head.

“No. This is being read.”

That line settled over him like a locked door.

James continued.

“The folder also includes witness statements from today.”

Daniel laughed once.

“From today? Nothing happened today except her little performance.”

The guests shifted.

That was his mistake.

One of my cousins spoke from near the cake table.

“You walked in holding that woman’s hand.”

Another guest said, “You introduced her as important to you.”

My aunt added, “At your pregnant wife’s baby shower.”

Chloe looked down.

Daniel turned in a slow circle, as if the whole garden had betrayed him.

But people had not betrayed him.

They had simply watched him.

And Daniel hated being seen clearly.

“I never said I wanted to take the baby,” he said.

“You threatened custody three minutes ago,” James replied.

“In front of thirty witnesses,” Oliver added.

Daniel’s face tightened.

Margaret whispered, “Daniel, stop talking.”

He ignored her.

“You think any judge will like this?” he said to me.

I stood straighter.

“I think any judge will like records better than threats.”

His mouth shut.

Finally.

I stepped closer, close enough that he could hear me without the garden hearing every word.

“I will never keep our daughter from a safe father,” I said.

“But I will never let you use her as a rope around my neck.”

His eyes flickered.

Because that was exactly what he had planned.

Not love.

Leverage.

Not fatherhood.

Control.

Chloe rose from her chair.

Her face had changed.

The pride was gone.

The performance was gone.

She looked smaller now.

Younger.

Less certain of the story she had walked in wearing.

“Emma,” she said.

Every head turned.

Daniel snapped, “Chloe, sit down.”

She did not.

For once, someone Daniel expected to obey him did not obey him.

Chloe looked at me, then at the folder, then at Daniel.

“There’s something he didn’t tell you either.”

The garden went silent again.

But this silence was different.

This one had teeth.

Daniel’s face went white.

“Chloe,” he said, very softly.

She ignored him.

She opened her handbag with shaking fingers.

“I have messages too.”
